WS2 - How to Teach Math in (Engineering) Context

Tuesday, 5/21/2019 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Camelia 1, Grand hotel Adriatic, Opatija

Organizers:

MIPRO and University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing

Chair:

Rebecca Christianson (Olin College of Engineering, Needham, USA)

This keynote speaker is partially supported by the IEEE Education Society Distinguished Lecturer Program.

Moderator:

Predrag Pale (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Croatia)

Contact:

Juraj Petrović, juraj.petrovic@fer.hr (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Croatia)

About:

In this workshop, participants will explore the integration of mathematics learning into a hands-on, project-based engineering context. We will work through example activities from a few different contexts so you can experience how these activities work from a student perspective. We will discuss the pedagogical research and theories underpinning why these sorts of activities are so successful, and we will discuss the practicalities of implementing project based learning including project selections and framing, structure, teaming, mentoring and assessment.

Expected outcomes:

Participants will gain a practical understanding of how to teach mathematics fundamentals through project based learning in an engineering context. Participants will understand both the student experience in these activities as well as the faculty considerations in designing them.

Target audience:

Technical faculty who wish to learn more about practical implementations of project based learning for teaching fundamental concepts.

Preliminary program:

Basic overview of project based learning.
Participants work through simple examples to illustrate the student experience in project based learning.
Discussion of approaches and key elements to learning quantitative topics within a project based context.
Practical considerations in project based learning including group work, teaming, classroom practice and assessment.

The workshop will be held in English.
