Polarisation Based Entanglement Distribution Quantum Networking
Quantum networks based on entanglement distribution have shown promise for building scalable and fully connected systems that support quantum key distribution. This work aims to go beyond simply implementing quantum key distribution and explore the potential of such networks for implementing quantum photonic interconnects. Our research demonstrates the passive polarization stability of these networks for over a week and highlights the benefits of dynamic reconfiguration to remove redundant resources. We discuss recent advancements in quantum frequency conversion and quantum memory-based networks, and argue that the development of scalable, long-distance interconnects is crucial for advancing quantum technology. Our findings have important implications for the future of quantum networking and highlight the need for entanglement based photonic interconnect networks, such that quantum technology can scale beyond monolithic systems.

Monolithic Receiver with Nine Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes
An optical receiver containing nine single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) and nine active quenching circuits is presented. This optical receiver was fabricated in a 0.35µm high-voltage CMOS technology without any process modifications. The SPADs avoid the excess noise of linear-mode avalanche diode receivers and allow for a better optical sensitivity. With 635 nm light, the 9-SPAD receiver achieves a sensitivity of -56.8 dBm for a bit error ratio of 2×10-3 at a data rate of 50 Mb/s. Compared to a 4-SPAD receiver fabricated in the same technology and introduced in 2020, the sensitivity is improved by 1.7 dB. The remaining gap to the quantum limit, which is -73.7 dBm at 50 Mb/s, is reduced to 16.9 dB. A comparison to the state-of-the-art of SPAD receivers will be included.

Occupancy Determination by Backscattered Visible Light Sensing
Demand driven control of heating or cooling, has the potential to reduce the energy consumption of buildings to a significant portion. One of the main cornerstones of such a demand driven control is the accurate determination of occupancy in the building or sub-areas of the building. In recent years many different approaches, founded on various technologies and sensing principles have been used for establishing an occupancy detection system. Especially in existing buildings retrofitting such a system can be associated with high installation effort and cost. Furthermore some technological approaches, mainly camera based systems are inflicting concerns in regard to the privacy of the users. In this manuscript we present and discuss an approach for a network of lighting fixtures that perform person recognition based on the technology of Visible Light Sensing. In our implemented system by solely capturing reflections of the visible light, caused by bypassing persons, the occupancy, the movement direction and the walking speed can be accurately determined. Based on comprehensive real world experiments we will show how our system, fully integrated into off-the shelf luminaires, is able to operate in different scenarios and ambient light conditions and only requires minimal installation effort without causing any privacy concerns.

An Experimental Investigation of Whispering Gallery Mode Microsphere Resonators for Sensing, Lasing, and Nonlinear Optical Applications
Microsphere resonators are gaining popularity as a key component in photonic circuit devices, optical communications, sensing, lasing, and nonlinear optical applications. As one of the essential categories of optical microcavities, microsphere resonators based on whispering gallery modes (WGMs) have benefits of ultra-high Q factor, small mode volume, ease of fabrication, and low cost. In this paper, we will present experimental results achieved by our group in regards to different application of microsphere resonators: 1) We studied the refractometric gas sensing sensitivity and the effect of thickness of the sol-gel silica layer coated to the microsphere to detect small traces of ammonia. 2) Rare earth doped microsphere resonators are promising candidates for lasing applications. Tellurite, fluoride, phosphate, and silicate glasses are good hosts for doping with rare earth elements for broadband applications. Tellurite doping with various rare earth elements can provide a wide stimulated emission cross section in the communication band. 3) High Q factor and low mode volume of WGM microresonators is a perfect host for non-linear optics application. We will present some non-linear effects which are present in silica spherical microresonators which include stimulated Raman scattering and frequency comb generation via degenerative four wave mixing.

Location:

Opatija is the leading seaside resort of the Eastern Adriatic and one of the most famous tourist destinations on the Mediterranean. With its aristocratic architecture and style, Opatija has been attracting artists, kings, politicians, scientists, sportsmen, as well as business people, bankers and managers for more than 170 years.

The tourist offer in Opatija includes a vast number of hotels, excellent restaurants, entertainment venues, art festivals, superb modern and classical music concerts, beaches and swimming pools – this city satisfies all wishes and demands.

Opatija, the Queen of the Adriatic, is also one of the most prominent congress cities in the Mediterranean, particularly important for its ICT conventions, one of which is MIPRO, which has been held in Opatija since 1979, and has attracted more than a thousand participants from over forty countries. These conventions promote Opatija as one of the most desirable technological, business, educational and scientific centers in South-eastern Europe and the European Union in general.
